Olde Naples Homes for Sale Are Surrounded by Naples History
Now Naples is known all over the world for its luxurious lifestyle and amenities. When it was settled in the late 1800s, it reminded the new residents of Naples, Italy.
Before it became modern-day Naples, the area was inhabited by the Calusa Indians, known as the Shell Indians and for the shell mounds they built and their dependence on shellfish, which was likely their main diet and was a source for the tools they made. The Calusa thrived until they were wiped out by European enslavement and diseases in the early 1700s. Southwest Florida became the home of a new tribe, the Seminole Indians. The area was otherwise mostly uninhabited until after the Civil War when Ted Smallwood constructed a trading post on Chokoloskee Island and George Storter Jr. opened one in Everglades City. You can still visit the historic Smallwood Store on Chokoloskee today, if you’re up for a drive.
Walter Haldeman and Ed Crayton really helped put Naples on the map. They brought electric power, rail service and a hotel to Naples. Naples didn’t see another development boom until the 1950s.
Under Haldeman and Crayton’s reign, downtown Naples began to take shape around Third Street South. The Naples Pier was built in 1888, not far from the present-day Olde Naples neighborhood. The Mercantile Building, along Third Street South, was the first commercial building in Naples, constructed in 1919, and currently houses the popular Campiello Ristorante & Bar. After World War II, the Naples Hotel, also built in 1888, saw famous celebrities come and go. There is more history here than in any other neighborhood in Naples.
